Tragic Circumstances Leading to Child's Death

An Arizona couple is currently in police custody facing serious charges of murder and child abuse following the death of a 22-month-old toddler. Artnesia Aaliyah Baptist, 24, and Alexsander Byrne, 21, stand accused of subjecting the child to severe physical abuse and deliberately withholding necessary medical care.

According to court documents, the pair allegedly poured scalding water over the toddler's head. Instead of seeking help, they reportedly hid the boy’s critical injuries from his biological father and went as far as threatening the father's life to prevent him from seeing the child.

Deliberate Neglect and Medical Cover-Up

In a probable cause affidavit, Byrne admitted that he and Baptist intentionally chose not to seek medical treatment for the child, fearing that doing so would trigger an investigation by Child Protective Services. Byrne acknowledged the severity of the situation, stating, «He knew it was wrong, illegal, caused additional injury to the child, additional pain, and caused the death of the child.»

Authorities revealed that approximately 40 percent of the boy’s body had been burned. Byrne reportedly confessed to seeing layers of skin peeling off the child, yet the couple continued to provide only superficial care, such as burn cream, aloe vera, and Tylenol. They further deceived family members, claiming the boy was merely suffering from a cold and falsely insisting he was recovering when medical assistance was offered.

Signs of Sepsis and Fatal Outcome

The toddler’s condition deteriorated significantly as the untreated burns led to severe infection. Byrne told investigators that the child developed a high fever, began vomiting, and lost the ability to walk. The child eventually succumbed to sepsis on April 12.

The medical examiner concluded that the victim experienced a «slow, painful decline of sepsis» that had progressed for at least two days prior to his passing. Police also noted that a search of Byrne’s internet history uncovered queries related to the lethality of burn injuries, indicating awareness of the danger the child was in.

Legal Proceedings

Following the discovery of the child’s death at the residence where the couple was staying, both individuals were taken into custody. Baptist and Byrne are being held on a $1 million cash-only bond. As of now, it remains unclear if formal pleas have been entered in court.
