Verdict Reached in High-Profile Murder Case

Blaise Taylor, a 30-year-old former college football player, has been found guilty on all four counts related to the deaths of his former girlfriend, Jade Benning, and her unborn child. A Nashville jury delivered the verdict on Wednesday, July 1, following the tragic events that occurred in 2023.

The convictions include second-degree murder and first-degree felony murder concerning the death of Benning, as well as first-degree premeditated murder and first-degree felony murder regarding the death of the unborn fetus. Following the announcement, the jury recommended a sentence of life imprisonment for the first-degree murder charges, with sentencing for the second-degree murder charge scheduled for September 9.

Prosecution Arguments and Evidence

During the trial, prosecutors presented evidence alleging that Taylor provided Benning with a lethal dose of cocaine mixed into a drink during a visit to her apartment on February 25, 2023. According to information provided by the prosecution, Benning had reached out to a friend that evening, expressing concerns that Taylor had tampered with her beverage due to his opposition to the pregnancy.

Court testimony highlighted an exchange where Benning confronted Taylor, stating: «I knew my drink tasted funny. You did this because you didn't want the baby.» Benning passed away on March 6, 2023, which was her 25th birthday, having previously lost the baby on February 27. Medical reports indicated a significant presence of cocaine in her system at the time of death.

Defense Stance and Background

Taylor has consistently denied the allegations, maintaining his plea of not guilty throughout the legal proceedings. His defense attorney, Letitia Quinones-Hollins, expressed strong disagreement with the verdict and confirmed plans to appeal the decision. In a statement regarding the ruling, the defense noted: «We understand and respect the pain that Ms. Benning’s family and friends feel over her tragic death and the death of her unborn baby, but putting an innocent man behind bars is also a tragedy.»

The defense team argued during the trial that Benning’s passing was the result of her own alleged substance use rather than the actions of the defendant. Taylor’s professional background includes a career as a college football player at Arkansas State University between 2014 and 2017, followed by a tenure as a graduate assistant coach at Duke University and a position as a scout for the Tennessee Titans from 2021 to 2023.
