Decoding the Nostalgia in 'I Knew It, I Knew You'
Taylor Swift’s contribution to the Toy Story 5 soundtrack, the heartfelt ballad “I Knew It, I Knew You,” carries significantly more weight than a casual listener might initially perceive. The singer-songwriter recently opened up about the lyrical complexity embedded within the track.
During a September 5th appearance on the iHeartCountry House Party, the 36-year-old artist explained her intentional use of wordplay. Specifically, she addressed the term “daze” in the song’s lyrics:
“The word daze is spelled ‘d-a-z-e’ in the lyrics, but you could also, if you wanted to think of it as days ‘d-a-y-s’ you could perceive it as that. But, I thought of it, like, a childhood daze you look back and you see this sort of blurry, beautiful memory that’s kind of blurry at the edges and blades of the grass in summer that harkens back to childhood and playing and using your imagination.”
A Musical Tribute to Jessie’s Journey
The song, which marks a return to Swift's country music roots, draws direct inspiration from the narrative arc of the cowgirl character Jessie, voiced by Joan Cusack, and her relationship with her former owner, Emily. The lyrics capture the bittersweet nature of that connection:
“I knew you / Through the daze of the blades of the grass in summer / Parachutes / For the free fall of being younger / I memorized the sound of your bare footsteps.”
Connecting with the Pixar Universe
Swift began crafting the track after viewing an early screening of the film. She noted that the emotional weight of Jessie’s backstory—particularly her abandonment as Emily outgrew her toys—deeply resonated with her. During a June 20/20 special dedicated to the movie, she reflected on the experience:
“For Jessie, I feel like the line, ‘I watched you drive around the bend for what I thought would be the last time I saw my friend,’ that hits me really hard because that movie just broke my heart. So I’m really happy to, like, give her a happy moment.”
Swift also expressed her gratitude for the opportunity to contribute to such an iconic franchise, noting that she holds the film in high regard. “I felt wonderful knowing that I had Randy’s blessing to write for this film, given that I’m the first songwriter to get to partake in the Toy Story world outside of Randy. I was absolutely dazzled by [the movie]. It is my favorite Toy Story movie,” she added.
