Criminal Charges Filed in Montgomery County

A Texas man, John Ruben Demeter, has been formally charged with the illegal performance of an abortion and injury to a child following a disturbing investigation into the death of his partner's unborn baby. The Montgomery County District Attorney’s Office confirmed the charges three months after the suspect's initial arrest, noting that the actions taken were without the mother's knowledge or consent.

Details of the Alleged Incident

According to authorities, the investigation began in February after a woman sought emergency medical care, suspecting she had been unknowingly exposed to abortifacient medication. Investigators allege that Demeter crushed abortion-inducing pills and concealed them within a beverage.

During a press conference, officials stated that the act was premeditated. As reported by KTRK, prosecutors noted:

“He covertly crushed that medication and mixed it in a water bottle with a liquid I.V. packet, and this was done with this specific intent to cause the death of the child.”

Tragic Outcome for the Unborn Child

At the time of the incident, the woman was approximately 14 weeks pregnant. Despite medical intervention, the pregnancy could not be saved. The sheriff confirmed that the unborn child, identified as Presley Mae, was stillborn at the hospital.

Investigators discovered that the victim had previously expressed concerns that Demeter was attempting to terminate the pregnancy against her wishes. She reported that he had previously suggested she travel out of state for an abortion and offered to cover the associated costs. Prosecutors believe the substance administered to the woman was mifepristone, which is prohibited under current Texas legislation.

Statements from Prosecutors

Local authorities have emphasized the gravity of the situation. Prosecutor Laura Hill remarked:

“These allegations describe conduct that is both deeply troubling and profoundly harmful. Our responsibility is to carefully evaluate the evidence, apply the law as written, and seek justice on behalf of victims and this community.”

Montgomery County District Attorney Mike Holley added that the case highlights a pattern of "deliberate deception" with catastrophic results. As of now, it remains unclear whether Demeter has secured legal representation or entered a formal plea regarding the allegations.
