Reflecting on a Career and Health Challenges

Chris Johnson, the former standout running back for the Tennessee Titans, has opened up about his health journey following his ALS diagnosis. In a poignant letter addressed to his four children, published via The Players’ Tribune, the 40-year-old athlete touched upon the possible connection between his decade-long professional football career and his current condition, which he first disclosed publicly this past June.

The Search for Answers

During his medical consultations, Johnson noted that revealing his background in the NFL often draws an immediate reaction from specialists. He shared his observations regarding the risks associated with the sport:

«I’ve seen a lot of neurologists at this point and been to basically every major ALS clinic in the country, and in my experience, as soon as you say you played football it’s like, ‘Ahh, OK.’ Almost like an understanding, you know? I read one study, and from my understanding, it found that former NFL players were nearly four times as likely to develop and pass away from ALS compared with the U.S. male population overall. That was a shock.»

While acknowledging that he is not a medical professional and that other environmental factors may contribute to the disease, Johnson admitted he cannot shake the feeling that his time on the field may have played a significant role in his diagnosis.

Legacy and Advice for the Future

Despite his health struggles, Johnson, a three-time Pro Bowler and the 2009 NFL Offensive Player of the Year, holds no desire to forbid his children from pursuing their own athletic ambitions. He remains optimistic about the evolution of player safety protocols:

«Your football journey is yours. Be fearless, be you, and don’t let anyone stand in the way of your dreams. The game is a lot safer now than when I was playing. And hopefully it just keeps on getting safer.»

Gratitude Amidst Adversity

Following his diagnosis, which he discussed earlier on Good Morning America, Johnson has focused his energy on his family. In a heartfelt message, he expressed deep appreciation for the support his children have provided during this difficult period:

  • He credited them for their encouragement on his most challenging days.
  • He acknowledged the unfair burden they have carried while helping to care for him.
  • He reaffirmed his commitment to fighting the disease, stating, «Everything I do is for you.»
