Details of the Accident
University of Georgia running back Dante Dowdell has been hospitalized with significant injuries following an accident involving an all-terrain vehicle (ATV). The news was confirmed by Bulldogs head coach Kirby Smart during the SEC Media Days on July 21.
Smart noted that the situation is delicate, stating, “It was a recreational vehicle, and he had some serious injuries.” While the coach did not provide specific medical details, he emphasized that the athlete's condition was severe enough to require transfer between two different medical facilities.
Medical Care and Recovery Outlook
Currently, the 21-year-old athlete is receiving specialized care at the Shepherd Center in Atlanta, a facility renowned for its expertise in treating brain and spinal cord injuries. According to Coach Smart, the immediate danger has passed, but the long-term prognosis regarding his return to the football field remains uncertain.
“He’s out of the really tough range, but as far as his complete health and coming all the way back, I don’t know what that looks like in terms of this year,” Smart explained. “We’re praying for him and his family. We expect a full recovery, but the outlook right now is we’re waiting to see.”

The Georgia football program has rallied around their teammate during this difficult period. Coach Smart highlighted the character of the young athlete, mentioning that many of his teammates have visited him in the hospital to offer their support. “I hate that for him and his family, but he’s a great kid. It’s been tough,” the coach added.
