This creative choice not only reshapes the immediate conflict but raises questions regarding the established lore of its predecessor, Game of Thrones.
The Prophecy Takes Center Stage
In the final episode, Queen Rhaenyra Targaryen (portrayed by Emma D’Arcy) makes a bold public announcement to the citizens of King’s Landing. She chooses to reveal the ancient Targaryen prophecy regarding the “Prince That Was Promised,” explicitly positioning herself as the messianic figure destined to lead the realm in the looming battle against the White Walkers.
While the prophecy is a familiar thread for viewers of the franchise, this specific public proclamation is absent from the original literature. Addressing why this moment of historical significance remained undocumented in Westerosi archives, show co-creator Ryan Condal suggested a pragmatic explanation during a recent press event.
“Targaryens say crazy s* all the time,” Condal joked. “It’s not in the book, and it’s not in the history, but there is a bunch of talk about how Rhaenyra became very despotic and became a tyrant at the end and was very unpopular with the people. So much of [the Targaryens’] existence is their self-aggrandizement. For the stonemasons standing there in the crowd just looking up at this [speech], it could just sound like somebody trying to make something of themselves.”
Setting the Stage for the Final Act
According to Condal, the scene serves a crucial thematic purpose. It highlights a profound shift in how Rhaenyra interacts with her subjects, signaling a transformation in her character trajectory as the story moves toward her inevitable decline in the upcoming fourth season.
Looking further ahead, the production team is already preparing for the conclusion of the series. Condal expressed enthusiasm for the final installment, which is slated for a 2028 release:
“We’re very excited to get back in, and we have new characters and new dragons and new locations all to come that I think are gonna make it a very worthy final season.”
