Closing the Chapter on Richard

Following a brief appearance in the second season, Scott Wolf's character, Richard, has been officially written out of the Fox medical drama Doc. The season 3 premiere, which aired on Tuesday, September 22, addressed his absence when Ben (played by Blair Underwood) inquired about Richard's location. Amy (Molly Parker) responded by noting, “He needed a fresh start. He is just over at Eastside.”

The Character's Troubled History

Richard first appeared in season 1, navigating a complex and difficult arc. His trajectory shifted dramatically when Amy discovered he was responsible for the death of a patient. Although she intended to report his professional negligence, a severe accident caused Amy to lose her memory of the preceding eight years. Ultimately, the season finale saw Richard confess his actions, effectively ending his career at the hospital.

Reflecting on the Role

Earlier this year, Scott Wolf opened up about his experience portraying Richard, highlighting the character's depth. He remarked on the unique complexity of the role, stating:

“I’ve never had a more fun, interesting, complicated and sometimes painful character to play. [...] It wasn’t like I had to figure out how to justify a bad guy doing bad things. This was a very good person who any of us could wind up being. But with his circumstances, he winds up in this terrible situation where a mistake has happened and his reaction to it is to just get protective.”

Wolf further noted that the character's downfall felt earned from a narrative perspective: “It felt inevitable to some degree. I didn’t know in the beginning exactly how things would play out but it feels like a tragic story from the start. And tragic stories tend to end tragically.”

Show Developments

While Richard attempted a brief reconciliation with Amy at the end of the second season, he did not remain part of the show's core narrative. As the series transitioned into its third season, other major changes included the departure of Felicity Huffman’s character and the addition of Blair Underwood to the cast. Doc continues to air on Fox every Tuesday at 9 p.m. ET.
