A Remarkable Coincidence
Days before Argentina and Spain clash in the 2026 FIFA World Cup final in East Rutherford, New Jersey, a nostalgic image has captured the hearts of football fans worldwide. The photograph shows a young Lionel Messi, then 20, assisting with the bath of an infant Lamine Yamal.
The image was captured in 2007 by Barcelona-based photographer Joan Monfort during a charity photoshoot for UNICEF. Reflecting on the serendipity of the moment, Monfort shared his amazement with the Associated Press: «I have never been a believer or thought that anything was destined to occur, but I am beginning to have my doubts. This is beyond all reasonable explanations.»
Origins of the Viral Moment
The photoshoot originated after Yamal’s family won a raffle to participate in a promotional campaign for a 2008 UNICEF calendar. At the time, Messi was a rising star for Barcelona, the club where he would spend the majority of his legendary career.
Nearly two decades later, the two players are set to cross paths on the sport's biggest stage. Lamine Yamal has since followed in the footsteps of his childhood mentor, becoming a UNICEF Goodwill Ambassador in 2026. Commenting on his journey, Yamal stated: «Playing football gave me structure, a sense of belonging, and hope for the future. I know how important it is for children to have a safe place to play, so that they can simply enjoy being children, discovering the world, imagining and growing.»
The Football World Reacts
The image has resonated deeply within the football community, even surprising players currently competing in the tournament. Spanish teammate Mikel Merino remarked on the surreal nature of the discovery:
«The first time I saw it, I thought it was AI and that it wasn’t even real. It’s unbelievable that two of the best players to have played the game—and hopefully Lamine, in the future, will be one of those—a picture like that.»
As the final approaches, even the photographer finds himself caught in a dilemma. As a dedicated Barcelona fan, Monfort admits he is conflicted about the outcome: «My heart is split. I don’t know if I want Messi or Yamal to win.»
