An Unforgettable Moment on the Dance Floor
During the recent “Viral Hits Night” on Dancing With the Stars, professional dancer Jenna Johnson and her partner, Harry Jowsey, delivered a performance that left fans talking. The highlight of their Viennese waltz to “Iris” by the Goo Goo Dolls was an unconventional and intense scream Jowsey directed straight into the camera mid-dance. Following the buzz generated by the move, Johnson took to social media to explain the artistic intent behind the shocking moment.
The Meaning Behind the Emotion
Johnson clarified that the scream was not a random act but a deliberate creative choice rooted in the dancers' personal experiences. She noted that because the competition featured a large number of couples, their pre-dance introduction video was cut short, leaving no time to explain the deeper themes of the routine to the audience.
According to Johnson, the performance was designed to explore feelings of anxiety, self-doubt, and the overwhelming pressure to fit in. Describing the process, she stated:
«We had talked about both of our anxiety, how that makes us feel, this constant doubt, this pressure that we have on ourselves, not feeling like you belong. We just dove into the emotion of it all — what does it feel like when you’re about to break?»
Artistic Expression and Subjectivity
Johnson revealed that she and Jowsey discussed how they physically cope with high-stress situations. She shared with her partner that when anxiety builds up, her instinct is often to release that energy through a vocal outburst. She encouraged Jowsey to tap into that raw emotion during their performance.
Addressing the polarizing reception from viewers, Johnson emphasized that art is deeply subjective. She remarked:
«You either loved it or you hated it. Totally fine. But that was our art. That was our expression. I hope that people who felt that emotion did resonate with the scream.»
Judges’ Feedback
The duo received a total score of 18 out of 30 from the judging panel. While Derek Hough and Bruno Tonioli praised the beauty and performance quality of the dance, Carrie Ann Inaba offered a more critical perspective, suggesting that Jowsey needed to find more confidence while in the dance hold. Despite the critique, the performance remains one of the most talked-about moments of the season.
