A Successful Journey to Recovery

Katie Thurston, best known for her appearance on The Bachelorette, has shared a heartfelt update regarding her mother’s battle with breast cancer. After months of treatment, Thurston announced that her mother has officially been declared cancer-free.

Thurston, 35, took to Instagram Stories on Thursday, June 11, to share the positive news. She explained that she had strongly encouraged her mother to undergo an MRI after learning about the risks associated with dense breast tissue. “We were able to find her cancer at stage one. She had a lumpectomy and today was her last day of radiation!! 21 rounds and this tough mama got to ring the bell!” she wrote, adding, “So proud of my mom.”

The Importance of Proactive Advocacy

The reality star first revealed her mother’s diagnosis in January, noting that it came roughly one year after her own health struggle. Thurston, who was diagnosed with stage III breast cancer in February 2023, has been a vocal advocate for medical vigilance.

Reflecting on the importance of early detection, Thurston shared the following message during her initial announcement:

“Dense breasts need more than a mammogram to screen for cancer and yet somehow my mom had never been referred for further imaging. We are getting more answers today but I believe our own advocacy allowed us to catch this early. If you have family history of breast cancer or dense breasts, please request further imaging such as a breast ultrasound and breast MRI.”

Ongoing Health Journey

Thurston’s personal battle with cancer has been challenging, as she previously disclosed that her condition progressed to stage IV after the malignancy spread to her liver. In April, she underwent a double mastectomy to aid in her treatment. Her husband, comedian Jeff Arcuri, provided updates to fans during that time, confirming that the surgery was successful and that she was recovering with a positive outlook.

Currently, Thurston continues to manage her treatment plan, which includes hormone suppression medication, as she remains dedicated to her ongoing fight against the disease.
