A Difficult Path Ahead for Cal

The latest episode of the Yellowstone spinoff, Marshals, which aired on Sunday, October 18, focused on a pivotal moment for Cal (played by Logan Marshall-Green). After disclosing his cancer diagnosis to his team, Cal prepared for his initial chemotherapy session. While he had insisted that he preferred to go through the process alone, the weight of the situation proved overwhelming once he arrived at the hospital.

In a touching turn of events, Belle (Arielle Kebbel) arrived to offer her support to both her boss and romantic partner. The episode concluded on a hopeful note, with Cal visibly comforted by Belle’s presence as he faces his personal health struggles.

The Impact of Cancer in the Yellowstone Universe

Cal is not the first character in this narrative universe to grapple with a cancer diagnosis. Following the events of the original Yellowstone series—which concluded earlier this year—it was revealed in the premiere of Marshals that Monica (Kelsey Asbille), the wife of Kayce (Luke Grimes), had passed away after a battle with the illness.

Reflecting on the decision to include such a tragic development for a beloved character, showrunner Spencer Hudnut explained the narrative necessity during an interview with TVLine:

«Kayce had such a perfect ending in Yellowstone. His dreams had finally come true. As we were trying to figure out how to tell the next chapter in Kayce’s story, it felt like he really needed to be shaken out of that. Unfortunately, tragedy tends to find Kayce, so something bad was going to happen for him one way or the other. It just sort of played out that it was going to be Monica.»

Respecting the Legacy

Hudnut emphasized the desire to handle Monica’s exit with care, noting, «We really wanted to be respectful of the way that we said goodbye to her. I also didn’t want to step on the ending of Yellowstone, because what they had was a beautiful ending. Unfortunately, real life intervened.»

While Kelsey Asbille has not publicly addressed the onscreen death of her character, she did grant permission for her likeness to be utilized, allowing the production to feature photos of Monica throughout the new series.

Marshals airs on CBS on Sundays at 8 p.m. ET, with episodes available to stream the following day on Paramount+.
