Conviction and Sentencing
A Missouri woman has received a sentence of life imprisonment plus an additional 15 years for the 2018 killing of a four-year-old boy. Quatavia Givens entered a guilty plea to charges including second-degree murder, child abuse, and abandonment of a corpse, according to Cole County Prosecutor Wm. Locke Thompson.
The Disappearance and Investigation
The case began in October 2018, when young Darnell Gray vanished from his home in Jefferson City during the night. At the time of his disappearance, Givens was babysitting the boy while his father—who was her boyfriend—was at work. Following the child's disappearance, Givens reported to law enforcement that the boy had gone missing along with several household items, including a coat, a backpack, and snacks.
Deceptive Behavior During the Search
Following the report, an extensive search effort was launched involving community members and officials. Reports indicate that Givens was actively involved in the search for the missing boy, a fact that later drew scrutiny from those who worked alongside her.
«Looking back, knowing that she was the one that hurt this baby, it just lets you know that this is a master manipulator that she was out there. She could’ve been on the soap operas, because she put on a show,» stated Mary Williams Coley, a volunteer with the organization Missouri Missing.
Lingering Questions
While the search volunteers grew suspicious of Givens due to her behavior, they continued their efforts until the boy's remains were eventually discovered five days later. Years after the tragedy, those involved in the search still struggle to comprehend the motive behind the crime. The trauma inflicted upon the young victim and his family remains a focal point for those who sought justice for the child.
