Commemorating Hockey Figures Before the Finals
Prior to the puck drop for Game 1 of the Stanley Cup Finals on Tuesday, June 2, NHL Commissioner Gary Bettman took a moment to address the media and pay respects to two significant figures within the hockey community who passed away recently: former NHL player Claude Lemieux and dedicated reporter Jessi Pierce.
"It’s appropriate to reflect on the people we’ve lost — those who thrilled us, and those who contributed to building the game we all love," Bettman stated. "Tonight, I’d like to mention, in particular, two people: Claude Lemieux and Jessi Pierce."
Remembering Claude Lemieux
Claude Lemieux, a four-time Stanley Cup champion who enjoyed a distinguished 21-season career, passed away on May 28 at the age of 60. Reflecting on his professional legacy, Bettman noted:
"Claude Lemieux was one of the greatest big-time game performers in the history of hockey. The Stanley Cup Final is where he shined the brightest. His flame extinguished far too soon last week. We are terribly saddened and we mourn his passing."
A Tribute to Journalist Jessi Pierce
The hockey world also continues to mourn the tragic loss of Jessi Pierce, a respected writer who covered the Minnesota Wild for NHL.com for a decade. Pierce and her three children died in a house fire on March 21 at the age of 37. While the investigation by the White Bear Lake Fire Department into the cause of the fire remains ongoing, officials have officially ruled out arson.
Bettman highlighted the deep impact Pierce had on the sport through her work:
"Jessi Pierce chronicled hockey with a professionalism and passion that could only come from somebody who truly cared for and adored the game. The tragic passing of Jessi and her three young children two months ago leaves a hole in our hearts and on our sport that cannot be filled."
Looking Ahead
Following the commissioner's address, the focus shifted to the ice, where the Hurricanes and the Vegas Golden Knights began their championship series at 8 p.m. ET.
