Medical Findings Released

The official cause of death for Jack Pugh, a former University of Wisconsin football player who had stepped away from the sport to prioritize his mental well-being, has been confirmed. According to a coroner's report, Pugh died from acute bronchopneumonia—a condition characterized by fluid accumulation in the lungs and airways. The report notes that this infection was a complication stemming from cardiomyopathy.

The 24-year-old athlete, who played as a tight end for the Badgers, also exhibited signs of hepatosplenomegaly, or an enlarged liver and spleen, at the time of his passing this past March.

A Legacy of Kindness

Following the news of his death, the University of Wisconsin released a heartfelt tribute on March 31. The institution stated: “The Wisconsin athletics family is deeply saddened to hear of the passing of Jack Pugh. Jack was a positive light and brought a genuine spirit to our football program. More than that, he cared about people and was loved by his teammates and staff.”

An obituary published in his memory highlighted his character, noting,

“His love for sports was matched only by his love for people; Jack had a huge heart and an innate ability to connect with everyone he met. His warmth and kindness touched the lives of many, leaving an indelible mark on family, friends, and colleagues alike.”

Athletic Career and Personal Journey

Pugh joined the Wisconsin football program as a highly regarded four-star recruit from Columbus, Ohio. He competed for the team from 2021 until 2023. His decision to retire from the sport was rooted in a desire to focus on his mental health.

At the time of his retirement, Pugh shared his struggle transparently on social media: “My physical health was not near perfect, but my mental health was the reason I decided to hang it up. Over years of prolonged depression and substance abuse, I decided I deserved a better life and to finally find happiness.”

He emphasized that his challenges were not caused by football itself, but rather by long-term neglect of his mental well-being. He concluded his message by expressing gratitude to his coaches and teammates, stating, “I want to thank the amazing Coaches, Teammates, Friends and Family @badgerfootball has provided me with over the years for helping me find a life I’m happy and proud of, and to finally create a relationship with God.”
