An Unfortunate End to the Doubles Campaign
Tennis legend Serena Williams has confirmed that she will no longer participate in the doubles event at this year’s Wimbledon tournament. The decision comes after she was initially set to compete alongside her sister, Venus Williams.
In a heartfelt message shared on social media, the 44-year-old athlete expressed her deep disappointment regarding the situation. Accompanied by footage showing her wearing a bandage on her right leg, Serena explained the circumstances surrounding her withdrawal:
«I’m heartbroken to have to withdraw from doubles. Coming back to compete again has been a gift, and the opportunity to play alongside Venus Williams once more meant the world to me. I did everything I could to be ready, but unfortunately my knee just isn’t ready to compete.»
The Road to Recovery and Wimbledon Challenges
Serena took a moment to express her appreciation for the tournament staff, specifically thanking tournament director Jamie Baker for his support. She also extended her gratitude to the fans, noting that their encouragement made her return to the sport particularly significant.
The injury occurred during her singles match against Maya Joint, which marked her first appearance in a singles competition in nearly four years. Despite a hard-fought battle, Serena struggled with the knee injury late in the opening set of the match, which ultimately concluded with a victory for Joint.
Medical Setbacks
Providing further transparency regarding her physical condition, the tennis star shared insights into her post-match medical care. In a social media update, she revealed the reality of the injury, stating:
«The photo of the syringes shows the fluid they drained from my knee after my singles match…yikes! The good news is my knee shouldn’t swell or collect that much fluid again. The bad news is that, as hard as I tried, I just wasn’t able to get it ready for doubles.»
Despite the setback, Serena maintained a positive outlook on her return to the grass courts. Following her first-round singles loss, she reflected on the importance of the experience, emphasizing: «I’m incredibly thankful for the wild card — and even more grateful my daughters got to see that it’s never too late to chase something you love.»
