Jury Verdict and Sentencing Recommendation
A jury in Hidalgo County, Texas, has returned a guilty verdict against 38-year-old Miguel Angel Ortiz Jr. regarding the death of his two-month-old son. Ortiz was convicted on a single count of injury to a child by omission, an event stemming from the infant's death in June 2025.
Following the deliberations, the jury proposed a 30-year prison sentence. The final decision regarding the duration of his incarceration rests with the presiding judge, who will announce the sentence at a future hearing.
The Investigation and Discovery of the Remains
The case came to light in June 2025 when local law enforcement conducted a welfare check at a residence in Pharr, Texas. According to authorities, friends of the father had alerted police after he allegedly disclosed that his infant son had passed away three days earlier. Upon entering the home, officers discovered the child's body.
An autopsy performed on the infant revealed multiple trauma sites, including bruising on the chest, buttocks, and skull. The medical examiner also noted evidence of decomposition. Reports from the scene indicated that the child's mother, 35-year-old Karina Aidee Ramirez, was seen leaving the property carrying the body wrapped in blankets at the time police arrived.
Legal Context and Pending Proceedings
While the jury convicted Ortiz of injury to a child by omission, he was acquitted of several other serious charges, including capital murder, murder, and aggravated assault. Prior to the incident, the parents had an ongoing case with Child Protective Services.
The child's mother, Ramirez, faces a more extensive list of charges, including capital murder of a child under the age of 10, child endangerment, and injury to a child. Her legal proceedings are slated to commence on June 15. Both defendants have been held at the Hidalgo County Adult Detention Center since their arrest on June 23, 2025, with Ramirez currently being held on a $350,000 bond.
