A Distinguished Career in Law Enforcement
John Baker joined the Pembroke Pines Police Department in 1994, dedicating nearly 28 years to the force before his retirement. During his tenure, he served in various capacities, including road patrol officer, field training officer, public information officer, and sergeant within the Traffic Unit.
Baker was widely respected for his dedication to traffic safety. Resilience Following a Life-Altering Crash
Baker’s life underwent a profound change on August 10, 2019, when he was critically injured in a motorcycle collision while on duty after another vehicle turned into his path. The injuries he sustained significantly impacted his speech and mobility, eventually leading to his retirement.
Despite these physical challenges, Baker remained deeply involved in the community. The Pembroke Pines Police Department highlighted his perseverance, noting on social media: «Through perseverance and the help of his family and medical team, Sergeant Baker regained limited motor skills. Despite his accident, Sergeant Baker stayed active in supporting the community.»
He participated in charity events for Special Compass, an organization assisting families and children with disabilities, and continued his support for the Special Olympics Torch Run.
Remembering a Dedicated Officer and Father
In the wake of the incident, the Pembroke Pines Police Department released a statement mourning the loss of a man described as a «joyful and positive» individual. Friends and colleagues emphasized that despite the hardships of his rehabilitation, his character remained unchanged.
