A Strategy of Calculated Chaos
Fans diving into the new spinoff Stuart Fails to Save the Universe may be surprised to encounter a series of glaring plot holes. In a recent discussion, executive producers Chuck Lorre, Zak Penn, and Bill Prady admitted that the show’s inconsistencies were entirely intentional throughout the first season.
While Penn joked about maintaining a detailed, organized chart of the show's logic, Lorre offered a more candid perspective: “We were absolutely in a dark room trying to figure out the elephant.” He noted that he focused primarily on the central time loop, acknowledging that while it wasn't perfectly airtight, it was sufficient for the narrative flow.
Prioritizing Humor Over Logic
For the creators, the presence of these gaps was a measure of their success. Penn argued that if the audience didn't find plot holes, the team hadn't done their job correctly. Prady added that the show’s characters are self-aware enough to notice these narrative discrepancies as they arise.
However, Lorre emphasized that searching for continuity errors shouldn't be the viewer's primary goal.
“Ultimately, if you’re looking for plot loopholes and you’re not laughing, we failed,”he stated.
The Premise of the Spinoff
The series follows Stuart Bloom, played by Kevin Sussman, as he attempts to fix the fabric of reality. After accidentally destroying a device created by Sheldon and Leonard, he triggers a multiverse-wide catastrophe. Stuart is joined by a ragtag group of allies, including his girlfriend Denise (Lauren Lapkus), his friend Bert (Brian Posehn), and the often difficult Barry Kripke (John Ross Bowie). Together, they encounter various alternate-reality versions of beloved characters from The Big Bang Theory.
Returning to the Role
For Kevin Sussman, stepping back into the shoes of Stuart Bloom felt remarkably natural. “Because the original Stuart was sadly not too different than me, it was pretty much the same,” he explained. Sussman shared that he didn't feel the need to reinvent the character, but rather focused on how Stuart reacts to the increasingly absurd circumstances he finds himself in. New episodes of the series are released every Thursday on HBO Max.
