The Uncertain Future of Euphoria

The acclaimed HBO drama Euphoria, which debuted in 2019, centers on the turbulent life of Rue, played by Zendaya, as she navigates recovery from addiction. While the show enjoyed rapid success, production has been plagued by significant delays, stretching the gaps between seasons to nearly three years.

Season 3, originally slated for a 2025 release, encountered multiple hurdles. These included scheduling conflicts with show creator Sam Levinson's project The Idol and the industry-wide WGA and SAG-AFTRA strikes of 2023, which further complicated the production timeline.

Tragic Losses and Production Challenges

The cast and crew have faced profound personal tragedies, including the untimely deaths of Angus Cloud and Eric Dane. The production had to adapt to these losses; Cloud's character, Fez, was written as being incarcerated, while Dane’s character, Cal, appeared briefly to reflect his real-life health battle.

Reflecting on these events, Levinson shared his perspective on the fragility of life:

«When Angus died, it was tough. I loved him deeply, and I fought hard to keep him clean. The year he died, in 2023, he was one of 73,000 people in America who died of a fentanyl overdose. I learned a whole lot that year, but what I realized more than anything is that death is what gives life meaning. You can’t be arrogant about existence. You’re forced to reckon with the fact that life itself is a wonder, a gift, a profound blessing.»

Will There Be a Season 4?

While an official cancellation has not been issued, indications suggest that the conclusion of season 3 may serve as the series finale. Sam Levinson has remained non-committal regarding the show's long-term future, stating in April 2026 that he approaches every season as if it were the last. He noted that he currently has no concrete plans for a fourth season and is focused on ensuring the final episodes of the current season are as impactful as possible.

Cast Departures and Final Reflections

Even if the network were to pursue a continuation, it would proceed without Jacob Elordi. The actor’s character, Nate, was written out in season 3, a decision Elordi addressed with a mix of nostalgia and closure. During an interview following the May 2026 episode, he remarked:

«It’s a bittersweet thing. This show is a massive part of — not just my career — but my life. It’s been amazing and I’m so proud of being a part of this.»
