A Heartfelt Farewell on Set
Following the emotional series finale of HBO's Euphoria, lead actress Zendaya has opened up about the show’s conclusion and the devastating fate of her character, Rue. In a behind-the-scenes segment aired after the episode, the 29-year-old star shared a poignant moment with the production team on her final day of filming.
Expressing deep appreciation for her colleagues, Zendaya remarked: «Many of you have been here from the beginning and have watched me grow up. It’s been such a pleasure and an honor. Thank you so much.»
The Narrative Choice Behind the Ending
The finale saw a dark turn as the character Ali, played by Colman Domingo, discovered Rue had passed away. The episode subsequently shifted to focus on themes of vengeance and grief, ultimately concluding with a somber tribute to Rue at the farm she frequented.
Show creator Sam Levinson addressed the narrative decision to end Rue's story with her death, emphasizing his commitment to an unflinching portrayal of addiction. He noted that the character's journey was always intended to reflect the harsh realities of struggle.
Honoring the Truth of Addiction
Levinson explained that he aimed to craft an honest account of the emotional turmoil surrounding substance abuse. Reflecting on the real-world impact of the current drug crisis, he stated:
«The honest ending is that people like Rue don’t make it. People relapse and they f* up. They’re not ready to get clean.»
Levinson further dedicated the conclusion to the memory of late cast member Angus Cloud, who passed away in 2025. He concluded by asserting that he refused to sugarcoat the narrative, stating, «I wanted to tell the story for Angus and for people who weren’t granted a second chance.»
Euphoria is currently available for streaming on HBO Max.
