A Promising Athlete Lost Too Soon
The sports community is mourning the loss of Jhenéy Wallace, a 20-year-old student-athlete who had high hopes of a professional basketball career. Wallace, a sophomore at Victor Valley College, was killed on Wednesday, July 15, following a severe vehicle rollover in Southern California's Cajon Pass.
Authorities reported that the Hyundai Veloster in which Wallace was a passenger left the roadway and plunged down a steep, 80-foot embankment. Emergency responders pronounced the young athlete deceased at the scene.

Describing her daughter as a vibrant and affectionate person, Tamara Wallace shared her grief with local media. «She was a great daughter. She was my best friend, my first-born. Always kept me smiling and encouraged me to do things. She was the best sister to her little sister and brother, very bubbly, always happy and loving,» her mother stated.
Beyond her talent on the basketball court, where she competed for the Rams, Wallace was a multisport athlete who also participated in volleyball. Her family noted that she was deeply committed to her dream of eventually playing in the WNBA.
Details Regarding the Incident
Reports indicate that three individuals were inside the vehicle at the time of the crash. Two other passengers—a friend of Wallace and the friend’s mother—were transported to a hospital in critical condition. While an official investigation into the cause of the accident is ongoing, preliminary information suggests that Wallace was not the driver of the vehicle.
The location of the accident, the 15 Freeway through the Cajon Pass, is frequently cited for its treacherous conditions, including steep grades and limited visibility, which have contributed to numerous traffic fatalities in recent years.

In the wake of this tragedy, a GoFundMe campaign has been established to assist the Wallace family with funeral expenses and financial strain. As of July 20, the community had already contributed over $16,000 to honor her memory and ensure she receives a proper memorial service.
