The basketball community is in mourning following the passing of Don Nelson, a titan of the sport who served as an NBA head coach for 31 seasons. Known for his tactical brilliance and innovative spirit, Nelson died at age 86, surrounded by his loved ones.
His family shared a touching statement regarding his final days: “On Sunday morning our beloved husband, dad, grandfather and great-grandfather Don Nelson peacefully went to be with the Lord, surrounded by his loving family. Throughout his last week, friends and family encircled him with love, sharing the blessing of his friendship and revisiting treasured memories.”
A Distinguished Playing and Coaching Career
Before transitioning to the sidelines, Nelson enjoyed a decorated career as a player, securing five NBA championships during his 11-year tenure with the Boston Celtics. His coaching journey was equally illustrious, spanning stints with the Milwaukee Bucks, Golden State Warriors, New York Knicks, and Dallas Mavericks.
Throughout his extensive coaching career, Nelson led his teams to 18 playoff appearances. In 2010, he retired holding the record for the most coaching wins in NBA history—a milestone that stood until Gregg Popovich surpassed the mark in 2022.

The loss of Nelson has drawn tributes from across the basketball landscape. Stephen Curry, who played under Nelson during his rookie season, credited the coach for his early development.
“One of the big reasons I was drafted by the Warriors was because of Don Nelson,” Curry noted. “He had an immeasurable impact on the sport and will go down as one of the greatest minds in the history of the game.”

Don Nelson is survived by his wife, Joy Wolfgram, his four children, two stepsons, and a large extended family of grandchildren and great-grandchildren.
