The academic and television community is mourning the loss of Dr. Courtney Shah, a former Lower Columbia College professor and a beloved seven-time champion on the long-running quiz show Jeopardy!, who has passed away at the age of 52.
Her daughter, Maya Shah, shared the news of her mother's passing through a post on CaringBridge. «My mom died today, at 4:57am on July 22, 2026, in the comfort of her home,» Maya wrote. «I don’t know what you believe about death, but I like to think that she’s at peace now. We loved her in this world, and we loved her out of this world, and we’ll go on loving her.»
The Journey Through Illness
The family first shared news of Dr. Shah’s health struggles in February 2026, when she received a diagnosis of brain cancer. By March, the family provided a difficult update: the cancer was not responding as anticipated to traditional medical interventions, including chemotherapy and radiation.
Following this news, Dr. Shah made the profound decision to discontinue aggressive treatment and transition into hospice care. In a statement reflecting the family's support for her choice, they shared: «With careful consideration, she’s made the brave, clear-eyed decision to stop treatment and transition to hospice. It’s not what any of us wanted, but only she knows her experience, and we trust her with that.»
Reflecting on the hospice experience prior to her mother's death, Maya expressed gratitude for the specialized support they received: «From my understanding now, hospice medicine focuses on providing comfort, quality of life, and symptom relief for patients with life-limiting conditions. One of the hospice nurses who came by our house called it ‘comfort care’ which helped me make sense of it.»
Accomplishments on 'Jeopardy!'
Dr. Shah first captured national attention during her appearance on Jeopardy! in 2021. She quickly became a fan favorite, securing a seven-game winning streak and accumulating a total of $118,558 in winnings. Her sharp intellect and charm led her back to the stage in 2022, where she participated in the Tournament of Champions, ultimately taking home a $5,000 consolation prize after a third-place finish in her quarterfinal match.
