Testimony Regarding Mental Health Struggles
Susan Clancy, the mother of Lindsay Clancy’s ex-husband, Patrick, provided emotional testimony in court on August 18. She stated that in the months preceding the deaths of her three grandchildren in January 2023, Lindsay had been openly pleading for support. According to the Associated Press, Susan described Lindsay as a devoted and affectionate mother who was clearly struggling, a concern shared by the entire family.
Susan revealed that she maintained a close relationship with the 36-year-old, who often confided in her regarding her psychological battles. In a text message sent on November 30, 2022—less than two months before the incident—Lindsay wrote to Susan: «I’m not okay and I’m terrified of taking meds tonight.»
The Legal Dispute Over Responsibility
Lindsay Clancy is currently facing charges for the deaths of her children: 5-year-old Cora, 3-year-old Dawson, and 8-month-old Callan. While the defense team, led by attorney Kevin Reddington, does not contest that Lindsay caused the deaths, they argue she should not be held criminally liable. Reddington contends that she was suffering from severe postpartum psychosis and that medications prescribed for postpartum depression negatively impacted her bipolar disorder.
Conversely, the prosecution asserts that the actions were premeditated. They allege that Lindsay intentionally sent her husband on errands to ensure she was alone with the children before strangling them, later attempting to take her own life by jumping from a second-story window.
Supporting Testimony from Family
Susan Clancy’s testimony followed appearances by other family members. On August 17, Lindsay’s mother, Paula Musgrove, testified that her daughter’s mental health had begun a sharp decline in October 2022. The court reviewed a message Lindsay sent to her mother during that period, in which she stated: «Mom, will you please come up and stay with me for a bit? I’m really sick. Something is wrong. I had horrible insomnia all night, and I just don’t know how I am going to get through the day. … It’s just really scary, and I don’t want to be alone.»
Additionally, Lindsay’s sister, Allison Ozga, recounted a December 2022 phone conversation during which Lindsay confessed to experiencing daily suicidal thoughts for over a month.
