The stars of the Netflix hit Heartstopper, Kit Connor and Joe Locke, have spoken out in defense of the franchise's inclusive intimate scenes, asserting that they are a natural and necessary progression of the narrative. As the show moves into its feature-length conclusion, Heartstopper Forever, the actors believe that honesty in storytelling is paramount.

In a recent interview, 22-year-old Kit Connor addressed the creative process regarding these scenes: «It’s a line that you have to walk: ‘How far are we going to take this?’ But at the end of the day, it did feel like these two guys are really attracted to each other at the age where they probably would have been doing it.» According to the actors, omitting such moments would have felt disingenuous to the characters' growth and their relationship's maturity.

The Evolution of Nick and Charlie

Connor and Locke, who portray Nick Nelson and Charlie Spring, have transitioned from starring in the original YA series adapted from Alice Oseman’s graphic novels to co-producing the final film. The duo notes that the characters' development over the course of the three seasons and the subsequent time jump necessitates a more mature portrayal of their bond.

Addressing rumors regarding the conclusion of the series, Joe Locke emphasized that the decision was not tied to a lack of viewer interest. Instead, he highlighted the ongoing importance of the show's global reach:

«The Heartstopper audience has been loyal throughout. [Today’s political climate] makes it more important. What’s great is that Netflix is everywhere, so even in these countries where you can’t be so openly queer, Heartstopper is still on Netflix and people still have access to it.»

Cast member Corinna Brown (Finney) also reflected on the significance of the series for the LGBTQ+ community, describing the show as a vital form of positive representation. She noted that while the show serves as escapism, it remains grounded in a reality that highlights the beauty of the queer experience.
