A Bold Creative Choice
The latest season of House of the Dragon kicked off on Sunday, June 21, with an episode that left audiences stunned. A pivotal and highly unexpected interaction occurred between Aemond Targaryen, portrayed by Ewan Mitchell, and his mother, Alicent Hightower, played by Olivia Cooke. The scene features a sudden, intimate gesture from Aemond, which left both the character and the viewers in complete shock.
The Actors' Perspectives on the Scene
Reflecting on the sequence, 29-year-old Ewan Mitchell admitted that the nature of the act is intended to provoke a visceral reaction. “It kind of makes you want to throw up in your mouth a little bit,” Mitchell shared in a recent interview. However, he also viewed the moment as a unique opportunity to explore the darker, more distorted aspects of his character’s personality, describing it as an expression of “skewed love.”
For Olivia Cooke, the experience of filming the interaction was equally complex and uncomfortable. Reflecting on the dynamic, she noted:
«There has been this Oedipal undercurrent — unbeknownst to Alicent. And I think it’s shocking.»
Cooke emphasized the precarious position her character finds herself in, explaining that Alicent is acutely aware of her son’s volatile nature. She noted that for Alicent, the gesture is “really dangerous” because she knows that any sign of hesitation or rejection could have lethal consequences. Despite the unsettling subject matter, Mitchell expressed high regard for his co-star, calling the opportunity to work alongside Cooke a “masterclass.”
A Legacy of Taboo Themes
The franchise, rooted in the world of Game of Thrones, is well-known for pushing boundaries regarding family dynamics. The series has previously explored various controversial relationships, including the marriage between Aegon and his sister Helaena, as well as the complicated romance between Rhaenyra Targaryen and her uncle, Daemon. This latest encounter continues a trend of challenging narratives that have become a hallmark of the saga. House of the Dragon continues to air on HBO and is available for streaming on HBO Max.
