A Public Response to a Private Tragedy
Buffalo Bills quarterback Josh Allen has spoken publicly for the first time regarding the tragic drowning of teammate Ed Oliver’s 2-year-old son, also named Ed. The Buffalo Bills organization confirmed the news on Saturday, August 22, after the information began circulating prematurely on social media.
Expressing his frustrations during a press conference, Allen noted the difficulty of the situation. «First off, I want to say thank you to the ones that knew about it, and allowed him to have his moment and his time. It’s very sad,» said the 30-year-old quarterback. «And, you know how it came out — it makes me very, very sad and angry at the same time.»
Respecting Privacy and Providing Support
The tragedy occurred on June 28 at the Oliver family home in Texas. According to reports from the Harris County Sheriff’s Office, emergency responders were called to the scene where the toddler was found unresponsive in a swimming pool. Despite being transported to a hospital in Houston, the child was pronounced dead shortly thereafter.
Allen emphasized that the team's priority has been to offer Oliver, 28, space and unwavering support. «There’s nothing you can say. There’s nothing that you can do,» Allen stated. «His teammates, that’s what we’ve been doing, is giving him his space and time. But at the same time, being around him, loving up on him.» He added that the team is rallying around their defensive tackle, ensuring he feels supported without pressure.
Organizational Condolences and Continued Mourning
Buffalo Bills General Manager Brandon Beane issued an official statement on behalf of the team: «On behalf of the entire Buffalo Bills organization, we want to publicly express our condolences to Ed Oliver and his family on the devastating loss of his son. It’s an unthinkable tragedy for any parent.»
Head coach Joe Brady also addressed the media, noting the immense difficulty in finding words for such a devastating event. «Whatever mourning looks like, however someone might want to handle it, it’s however he wants us to handle it,» Brady remarked. «I don’t really have the words now but all I can do is just be there for him in whatever way he needs.»
Despite the personal loss, Oliver has continued to participate in training camp activities. He was absent from the team's recent preseason victory against the Cleveland Browns, though coaching staff clarified that his absence was due to a minor injury rather than the tragedy itself.
