A Subtle Gesture on Set
During the October 2 broadcast of The Source With Kaitlan Collins, sharp-eyed viewers noticed a specific item on the news anchor's desk. The 34-year-old journalist was seen with a mug bearing the phrase “America Needs Nasty Women.” While Collins has not officially commented on the prop, many interpreted it as a response to the persistent verbal attacks directed at her by Donald Trump.
Escalating Tensions with the Media
The former president has frequently targeted Collins in recent months. Trump's rhetoric towards the journalist is part of a broader, long-standing pattern of hostility toward the press. Notably, he previously used the term “nasty woman” to describe Hillary Clinton during a 2016 presidential debate.
In a recent interview with TIME, Trump disparaged the CNN anchor, labeling her as “very average” and characterizing her as an exceptionally unhappy individual. These comments follow a September incident at the United Nations General Assembly, where Trump openly questioned why Collins and other CNN staff were present, despite accreditation provided by the UN. Following the event, Trump escalated his rhetoric on social media, referring to the journalist using derogatory language and accusing her of having a “'TRUMP' addiction.”
Focusing on Journalism Over Personalities
Despite the high-profile clashes, Collins has consistently stated her preference to avoid making herself the story. In a July appearance on The Daily Show, she emphasized that her priority remains professional accountability:
“I’ve always felt this, regardless of who’s the president … it’s really not about me, and I don’t want it to be about my reaction. Instead, I think it’s more important to remind people in those moments when he is insulting me, he is criticizing me … it’s important to put the reminder back on the work, on the question, and on the non-answers that we get.”
This approach highlights her commitment to maintaining the focus on the subjects she covers rather than engaging in personal disputes with political figures.
