A New Chapter for Kelsey Asbille
Kelsey Asbille is officially returning to the screen for her first major project since the conclusion of Yellowstone and the unexpected passing of her character, Monica, in the spin-off series Marshals. It was confirmed on Thursday, June 4, that the 34-year-old actress has joined the cast of the action thriller The Kellys. She is set to star alongside heavyweights Arnold Schwarzenegger and Liam Hemsworth. Amazon MGM has secured the rights for a worldwide streaming release, though specific details regarding Asbille's character remain undisclosed.
The Premise of The Kellys
Production for the film is already in progress. The story centers on Jack Kelly, a former New York City police officer who faces a desperate situation when his wife, Molly, is held captive by terrorists within a historic armory. According to the official synopsis, the protagonist is forced into an uneasy alliance:
“Subsequently, he’ll have to join forces with the people he fears most to save her: His family.”
The Departure of Monica
Asbille’s departure from the Yellowstone universe was a significant plot point in Marshals. While her character, Monica, concluded the flagship series on a stable note with Kayce, the spin-off revealed that she had passed away from cancer. Showrunner Spencer Hudnut explained the creative decision to alter Kayce's trajectory:
“Kayce had such a perfect ending in Yellowstone. His dreams had finally come true. As we were trying to figure out how to tell the next chapter in Kayce’s story, it felt like he really needed to be shaken out of that. Unfortunately, tragedy tends to find Kayce, so something bad was going to happen for him one way or the other. It just sort of played out that it was going to be Monica.”
Hudnut further emphasized that the team aimed to handle the character's exit with sensitivity, stating, “I also didn’t want to step on the ending of Yellowstone, because what they had was a beautiful ending. Unfortunately, real life intervened.” While Asbille has remained quiet regarding the death of her character, she did authorize the use of her likeness, allowing the production to feature photos of Monica on screen.
