A Deviation from the Literary Timeline

Netflix’s recent debut of Little House on the Prairie surprised many longtime fans by diverging from the chronology established in Laura Ingalls Wilder’s iconic book series. While the novels are primarily recognized for the Ingalls family's period in Plum Creek, near Walnut Grove, Minnesota, the streaming adaptation initially transports viewers to the 1870s, focusing on the family's homesteading efforts in Independence, Kansas.

The Road to Plum Creek

The first season concludes with the Ingalls family grappling with significant financial hardship. This struggle serves as the catalyst for their relocation to Plum Creek, effectively aligning the show’s trajectory with the source material fans know best. With the series already renewed for a second season, viewers can expect the narrative to remain faithful to the established lore of the books, which do mention the family’s earlier residency in Kansas.

A New Generation of Talent

This latest version follows the legendary 1974 NBC adaptation, which famously launched the careers of actors like Jason Bateman and Kyle Richards. The new Netflix iteration features a fresh ensemble cast, including Alice Halsey, Luke Bracey, Crosby Fitzgerald, and Skywalker Hughes, supported by talents such as Jocko Sims and Warren Christie.

Commitment to Authenticity

Ahead of the premiere, showrunner Rebecca Sonnenshine addressed concerns regarding the adaptation process, emphasizing the creative team's dedication to the source material. In an interview, she noted:

«I want people to know, first of all, everybody making this show cares about the books and bringing it to life and being as authentic as we can and bringing all those details to life that people love.»

Sonnenshine highlighted that the series aims to capture the journey through Laura's perspective, emphasizing discovery and the core values found in Wilder's writing. She described the books as a vital component of American literature, promising that the show will continue to focus on themes of community, kindness, and generosity.
