Expanding the Yellowstone Universe

Since its 2018 debut, the Yellowstone franchise has become a cultural phenomenon. Centered on the Dutton family and their massive Montana ranch, the series captivated audiences with a stellar cast, including Kevin Costner, Kelly Reilly, and Luke Grimes. Creator Taylor Sheridan has since turned this success into an expansive television empire, launching hit shows such as Mayor of Kingstown, Tulsa King, Lioness, and Landman, alongside successful prequels like 1883 and 1923.

The Mystery of '6666'

Amidst these developments, fans have frequently inquired about the status of 6666, a project intended to focus on the character Jimmy Hurdstrom (played by Jefferson White) and his life at the historic Four Sixes ranch in Texas. The premise of the show was framed by a deep connection to Western heritage:

«Founded when Comanches still ruled West Texas, no ranch in America is more steeped in the history of the West than the 6666. Still operating as it did two centuries before, and encompassing an entire county, the 6666 is where the rule of law and the laws of nature merge in a place where the most dangerous thing one does is the next thing. The 6666 is synonymous with the merciless endeavor to raise the finest horses and livestock in the world, and ultimately where world class cowboys are born and made.»

Development Hurdles and Delays

The last major update regarding 6666 occurred in 2022, when it was announced that the series would be moved from the Paramount+ streaming platform to the Paramount Network. Since that time, silence from the studio has led many to speculate that the project has been sidelined in favor of other spinoffs, such as the potential 1944 prequel or new stories involving characters like Beth and Rip.

Insight From the Cast

Regarding the uncertainty of these various projects, cast members remain in the dark about Sheridan’s specific plans. In a 2024 interview discussing the conclusion of the main Yellowstone series, stars indicated that they are waiting for scripts to arrive before knowing the future direction of the franchise.

Addressing the creative process, one cast member noted, «I honestly don’t know how Taylor chooses to tell which stories he chooses to tell when. I think he has closed a lot of doors on Yellowstone this season. There are obviously characters that we will not see again because they have been dispatched. But I think he has left some doors open, and there’s some doors that I can’t tell if they’re locked or not yet. But we will know when we cross through them.»

For now, the future of the Four Sixes ranch onscreen remains a lingering question for the franchise's dedicated fanbase.
