Concerns Over Investigative Expertise
Aaron Cross, president of the Pima County Deputies Organization, has publicly raised alarms regarding the qualifications of the detectives currently tasked with the investigation into Nancy Guthrie’s disappearance. More than six months have passed since Guthrie went missing, and the case remains unresolved, leading to heightened scrutiny from the largest union representing sheriff’s deputies in the region.
According to Cross, the lead sergeant on the case lacks the necessary background for such a complex investigation. “He was promoted to sergeant only in 2023, and moved rapidly from patrol directly into the homicide unit,” Cross stated. He suggests that the assignment was a command decision rather than a request from the officer himself, raising questions about the department's leadership choices.
The Role of Experience in Homicide Cases
Cross described the current investigative team as "novice homicide detectives," arguing that this level of inexperience is unprecedented within the department. He noted that historically, the unit relied on seasoned mentors to train new arrivals. Cross emphasized the gravity of the situation, stating:
“You can’t even call yourself a homicide detective until you’ve been through a trial — so it takes time to learn the ropes.”
Alleged Missteps and Official Response
Beyond the staffing concerns, Cross pointed to what he considers a major procedural error in the early stages of the case. He claimed that the crime scene was released back to the family far too quickly, potentially compromising the investigation. “The big misstep, in my opinion and the opinion of many of the detectives and people in the community, is just giving up the scene so quickly,” he alleged.
In response to these claims, a representative for the Pima County Sheriff’s Department stated that they do not have any information regarding these matters at this time. Meanwhile, Sheriff Nanos has maintained that the team remains deeply committed to the case, recently telling the Guthrie family in a video message that his staff continues to work with significant energy and concern.
Family’s Ongoing Search for Answers
The six-month anniversary of the disappearance brought renewed pain for the family. Savannah Guthrie, daughter of the missing woman, took to social media to share her grief and reiterate her plea for information. She described the family's ongoing struggle, noting that they have been living in a state of "agony and despair" since her mother was taken from her home.
