Public Apology and Accountability
Vasana Montgomery, who was recently dropped from the cast of Love Island USA, has broken her silence regarding the controversy that led to her departure. The decision to remove her from the show came after offensive videos from her teenage years began circulating on social media, in which she was heard using a racial slur.
In a statement posted to her Instagram Story on Wednesday, June 3, Montgomery expressed her regret: «I want to address a couple videos from my teen years that have recently resurfaced. In those videos, I used a racial slur. I am embarrassed and disappointed by my words.»
She emphasized her desire to own her past behavior, adding: «I take full responsibility for what I said and understand why it has hurt and upset people. Since then, I have grown a lot as a person and taken the time to educate myself, listen, learn, and better understand the impact that language can have.»
Context of the Removal
Montgomery was cut from the production of season 8 before she had the opportunity to enter the villa. Because the clips originated from private accounts, the production team was unaware of the content during the initial casting process. Her exit marks another instance of the show addressing past controversies involving its cast members.
Similar Precedents in the Series
This is not the first time the Peacock dating series has navigated such issues. Previously, contestants Yulissa Escobar and Cierra Ortega left the show under similar circumstances after offensive social media history came to light.
Cierra Ortega, who was removed during season 7, provided a detailed reflection on her own experience in a video shared in July 2025. During her statement, she addressed the Asian community directly, acknowledging that while she used the term naively without full awareness of its history, her intent did not excuse the harm caused:
«I had no idea that the word held as much pain, as much harm and came with the history that it did or I never would have used it. I had no ill intention when I was using it but that’s absolutely no excuse because intent doesn’t excuse ignorance.»
Ortega concluded by stressing that she viewed her statement as an accountability video rather than a simple apology, noting that she intends to make significant changes to her conduct moving forward to better herself and reflect on the consequences of her past actions.
