Indiana Mother Charged After 3-Year-Old Son Drowns While She Was Intoxicated

Tragic Incident in Evansville

A heartbreaking event has unfolded in Indiana, where a 3-year-old boy lost his life due to drowning. The incident occurred while his mother, Amie Jo Farber, had reportedly consumed a significant amount of alcohol, leading her to lose consciousness on a patio chair.

The Sequence of Events

According to a probable cause affidavit, authorities from the Evansville Police Department were dispatched to a residence on Saturday following reports of an unresponsive child. Despite the immediate life-saving efforts initiated by first responders and his subsequent transport to a local hospital, the young boy was tragically declared deceased.

The owner of the home, who was present during the incident, stated that he was aware of Farber’s struggles with alcohol. He noted that she appeared to be under the influence upon her arrival. The homeowner described the moments leading up to the tragedy:

“He said that he and Farber sat outside as the boy swam in the pool on a floatie. The homeowner then went inside for about 10 minutes and he found Farber ‘passed out’ in a patio chair when he returned. The homeowner also said he did not initially see the boy, but the floatie was overturned in the pool.”

Upon discovering the overturned floatie, the homeowner spotted the child face down in the water. He pulled the boy from the pool and immediately began performing CPR while calling for emergency assistance.

Legal Consequences for the Mother

Investigators allege that during her two-hour visit to the home, Farber consumed five 25 oz. cans of Bud Ice. Following the incident, Farber spoke with law enforcement, claiming she had entered the pool briefly before returning to her chair, where she admitted she “must’ve fallen asleep.”

Following a blood sample collection, Farber was taken into custody and transported to the Vandenburgh County Jail. She is currently facing a charge of neglect of a dependent resulting in death and is being held on a $25,000 bond. Her initial court appearance is scheduled for September 23. At this time, it remains unconfirmed whether she has retained legal counsel or entered a formal plea.
