Details on the Passing of Jack Roney
The circumstances surrounding the untimely death of NC State University swimming and diving coach John “Jack” Roney have been officially clarified. Following an autopsy, authorities have determined that the 39-year-old coach’s death last month was an accident.
According to reports from the medical examiner, the incident occurred while Roney was at a community pool with his wife, Maresa Roney. Surveillance footage reviewed by law enforcement showed Roney engaging in underwater breath-holding exercises. He remained submerged for over two minutes, briefly surfaced for air, and then returned underwater.
The Sequence of Events
During the brief period that Roney was underwater, his wife stepped away to make a phone call. Upon her return approximately five minutes later, she discovered her husband unresponsive in the pool. The medical examiner’s report states:
“Wife told medics her husband was an avid swimmer and on that evening, he had been doing some breathing exercises [and] holding his breath underwater. Wife pulled him from the water and called 911 … then began CPR.”
Emergency responders arrived to find Roney in a state of pulseless electrical activity and conducted resuscitation efforts for roughly an hour, but they were unable to revive him. The investigation confirmed there was no evidence of foul play, suicide, or substance abuse.

The university expressed its condolences, noting the significant contributions Roney made to the athletic program and the local community. Roney, a former collegiate swimmer, is remembered by his colleagues as a dedicated mentor.
His family has shared heartfelt tributes, reflecting on his character and devotion. His sister, Amber Moore, described him as the "glue" to their family, highlighting his constant drive to improve himself. Another sister, Katie Corum, noted:
“Grief is the price we pay for loving someone so deeply. Right now, this pain feels never ending, but it also reminds us just how lucky we were to have had Jack in our lives.”
Jack Roney is survived by his wife, Maresa, with whom he had recently celebrated 15 years of marriage, as well as their five children and his siblings.
