Tragic Incident in Memphis
A Memphis, Tennessee, father is facing serious criminal charges after his five-year-old son, Tamir Washington, died from a self-inflicted gunshot wound. The incident occurred on the afternoon of Monday, August 18, at the family’s residence.
According to reports, the child's mother, Rodnesha Walker, had briefly stepped out of the room where Tamir was eating and working on school assignments. During this brief period of time, the young boy gained access to his father's firearm and accidentally shot himself in the head.
Emergency Response and Aftermath
First responders arrived at the scene shortly after the incident and provided urgent medical assistance. The boy was rushed to a local pediatric hospital, but he was declared deceased less than an hour after the arrival of police.
Court documents describe the chaotic scene that unfolded following the tragedy:
“The wound appeared consistent with a gunshot wound to the head.”
Witnesses reported that the father, 24-year-old Marquavious Washington, was found in the front yard, distressed and claiming he did not understand how his son had discovered the weapon. Neighbors attempted to assist the family, describing a scene of extreme panic and sorrow as the mother emerged from the home.
Legal Consequences
Following a police investigation, Marquavious Washington was taken into custody and transported to the Shelby County Jail. He currently faces several felony charges, including:
- Criminally negligent homicide
- Aggravated child abuse
- Reckless endangerment with a deadly weapon
Washington is currently being held on a $100,000 bond. He is slated to appear before a judge on Thursday, August 20. At this time, it is not publicly known if he has secured legal representation or entered a formal plea.
