The Evolution of Kayce Dutton’s Career

Fans of the hit series Yellowstone were long accustomed to seeing Kayce Dutton (played by Luke Grimes) operating as a livestock agent and commissioner for the Montana Livestock Association. Leveraging his elite background as a former U.S. Navy SEAL, Kayce was primarily focused on protecting ranching interests and enforcing local laws.

However, the 2026 spinoff Marshals shifts the narrative, depicting Kayce as he trades ranch life for the demanding responsibilities of an elite U.S. Marshals unit. The show highlights his transition into a law enforcement officer tasked with maintaining order in Montana, balancing the intense psychological pressures of the job with his personal life.

What Does a U.S. Marshal Actually Do?

While the series dramatizes Kayce's fight against regional violence, the real-world duties of a U.S. Marshal are highly varied and critical to the federal justice system. According to the agency's official guidelines, their core responsibilities include:

  • Apprehending federal fugitives who have evaded the law.
  • Ensuring the safety and protection of federal judges.
  • Managing the secure transport of federal prisoners.
  • Overseeing the Witness Security Program (WITSEC).
  • Handling and managing assets seized from criminal organizations.

Behind the Scenes of the Spinoff

Luke Grimes admitted in a recent interview that he felt significant pressure stepping into a lead role for a Yellowstone offshoot. He noted that he was initially uncertain if his character would be the top choice for a spinoff, which provided him with the motivation to deliver a high-quality performance.

«If you take a poll of who people want to have a spinoff, I don’t know if Kayce would be top of that list. I think there’s other characters that they would rather see. So there was a fire under me. Like, it has to be good. If it’s not good, I’d rather not do it.»

Grimes emphasized that the production team worked diligently to ensure the show felt authentic for loyal fans of the original series while remaining accessible to newcomers. The actor recalled that the opportunity for this procedural-style show on CBS emerged during the final stages of filming the original Yellowstone, turning a period of uncertainty into a new chapter for his character.

Marshals currently airs on CBS every Sunday at 8 p.m. ET.
