A Dramatic Conclusion to Season 1
The first season of the Blue Bloods spinoff, Boston Blue, wrapped up with a series of high-stakes events that left audiences questioning the fates of several key characters. The finale centered on Lena (Sonequa Martin-Green), who navigated a tumultuous day involving a long-awaited reunion with her biological father, the news that her partner Brian (Ryan Broussard) was considering a move, and a life-threatening shooting. While Lena survived the incident, she faced significant physical recovery, only for the finale to culminate in a targeted car crash involving Brian, leaving his future on the series uncertain.
Showrunner Brandon Sonnier and executive producer Brandon Margolis confirmed that the second season will pick up after a brief time jump. This narrative choice allows the characters to move past the immediate medical aftermath and focuses the story on the investigation behind the mysterious car accident. “It pushes us a little bit further down the road of who was driving the car, what was the inciting incident for that event and we unravel what happened right after,” Sonnier explained.
Potential Departures and Romantic Twists
One of the most pressing questions for fans is whether Ryan Broussard will return to the show. While the producers remained tight-lipped about Brian’s survival, they praised Broussard’s contribution to the cast. Margolis noted, “If the opportunity for him to be on season 2 is there, we would jump at it. But it’s called a cliffhanger for a reason. You got to come back — that’s what you got to tune in for.”
Meanwhile, the relationship between Danny (Donnie Wahlberg) and Baez (Marisa Ramirez) saw a major turning point as the two reconciled and discussed the prospect of living together. The producers confirmed that Baez will return for the second season, emphasizing how much they enjoy the chemistry between the two actors.
The Reagan Connection and Future Crossovers
The finale also surprised fans with the appearance of Will Hochman, who reprised his role as Joe Hill. According to the production team, the cameo was largely fortuitous, as Wahlberg learned that Hochman was already in the area for another project. The producers view the integration of the Reagan clan as a vital part of the show's identity.
“It enriches our lives to get to continue their stories,” Margolis stated regarding potential future cameos. “So we would love to extend that invitation and have new Reagans appear and Reagans who were there last year to come back.”
As the team looks toward the future, they are exploring new ways to deepen the dynamics within the show's "found family." When asked about the possibility of further spinoffs or sub-series, the producers expressed openness to new narratives, provided the story is right: “If the opportunity presents itself and there’s the right story to tell... absolutely. We love it.”
