The Future of Tulsa King

As speculation grows regarding the future of Tulsa King, executives have stepped forward to provide clarity. During a recent discussion, Jane Wiseman, head of originals at Paramount+, addressed the series' longevity following reports of creator Taylor Sheridan’s upcoming professional shift.

Wiseman confirmed that excitement is building for the next installment, stating, “We’re about to announce the premiere date for Tulsa King season 4, that one is coming out. It’s an incredible season. Sly [Stallone] is in great form in the show, and there’s going to be some surprises. But that show is continuing.” When questioned about the possibility of the series extending beyond the fourth season, she noted, “It could. Between Tulsa and Landman, which Taylor is writing right now, Frisco, Dutton, Madison, we have a lot of business, and we’re going to be in business for time to come.”

Production Challenges and Shifts

The series has navigated a complex production environment since its inception. Initially, Terence Winter served as showrunner alongside Sheridan. However, following the renewal for a second season, Winter stepped down from the showrunner position due to creative differences, though he remained attached as the head writer. Sheridan ultimately chose not to appoint a new showrunner for the second season, instead opting for a director and executive producer to manage daily operations.

Taylor Sheridan’s Move to NBCUniversal

The broader context for these developments involves a major career transition for Taylor Sheridan. He has secured a five-year, multi-platform deal with NBCUniversal, set to commence on January 1, 2029. This agreement will take effect once his current contract with Paramount concludes at the end of 2028.

Under the terms of this transition:

  • Paramount retains full rights to the Yellowstone franchise and other existing properties developed by Sheridan during his tenure.
  • Sheridan is expected to focus on developing entirely new intellectual property for NBCUniversal.
  • This strategic shift follows the corporate merger between Paramount and Skydance Media.
