Julie Chen Moonves, the iconic face of Big Brother, recently shared that her journey on the reality hit wasn't without its hurdles. Looking back at the show's inaugural season, the now 56-year-old host admitted that she often felt conflicted regarding the scripts she was given.
«I would say don’t let those words come out of my mouth unless it’s something I would say,» Julie explained during an interview celebrating the program’s 1,000th episode. At the time, barely 30 years old and transitioning from a background in news, she felt pressure to perform perfectly. She noted that while some of the phrasing didn't feel authentic to her, she lacked the confidence to challenge the writers: «I didn’t argue back enough to say, ‘Let’s change the script.’ I was just like, ‘Okay, let’s say this.’ And I’m like, ‘I would never say that. I don’t think it sounds good.»
Finding Her Voice
The transition from a serious CBS news anchor to the host of a high-energy reality competition in 2000 was significant. Over the decades, Chen Moonves has evolved into an essential part of the show's identity. Reflecting on her career, which now includes two Guinness World Records, she emphasized that if she could offer advice to her younger self, it would simply be to trust her intuition.
«Most of all, I feel humble and grateful because I never would have dreamt it,» she said regarding her historic tenure in television.

Even after 1,000 episodes, the unpredictable dynamics within the Big Brother house continue to captivate the host. When asked what still surprises her, she pointed to the contestants' willingness to rely on one another.
«I am still surprised every day at the level of trust. You know, it’s like you’ve all watched. You should be a little bit more paranoid, but every season — I guess it’s kind of beautiful, because it shows that humans want to trust and believe other humans,» she remarked.

As the show continues to evolve, Chen Moonves keeps a close eye on the competitors. She expressed admiration for current houseguest Taylor Brown, praising her strategic approach to the game.
«Taylor, because she gets it. She’s a thinker, and she knows when to stay quiet. She knows when to give LaTrice Verrett advice, and she just is entertaining me like there’s no tomorrow. She so gets this game,» the host added.
