Overcoming Internal Doubts

Since 2016, Rachael Leigh Cook has become a familiar face for Hallmark viewers. However, the 46-year-old actress recently admitted that her journey with the network almost didn't happen because she was worried about her professional image.

During a recent appearance on the “I Love You So Much — ILYSM” podcast, Cook recalled the apprehension she felt a decade ago. She shared that her former husband, Daniel Gillies, often challenged her career choices, once teasingly remarking, “You can’t handle challenging content!” Cook now admits that assessment was accurate, noting that her desire to avoid darker themes initially made her wary of Hallmark’s wholesome reputation.

“It was sort of playing into my fears that I had about myself,” she explained. Ultimately, she chose to embrace her true preferences, stating: “Then I was just like, ‘Ah, screw it. This is who I am.’ I’m a huge cornball. I love love.”

Finding Creative Empowerment

Once Cook aligned her career with her personal interests, she found that Hallmark provided an environment where she could flourish. She praised the network for its supportive culture, particularly regarding female talent.

“They’re honestly also just doing so much that they don’t handcuff you to the words, to the punctuation, to the stuff. They really give you a lot of creative freedom. That was really empowering,” she said. This creative liberty encouraged her to step behind the camera, marking a significant shift in her career path as she began producing her own projects.

A Natural Fit for the Rom-Com Genre

Cook’s involvement with Hallmark is deeply personal, as she is an avid fan of the romantic comedy genre she helps create. “I’ve always been so earnestly enthusiastic about the romantic comedy genre,” she added. “I drink that Kool-Aid all day. I make it in my kitchen. It’s in my veins.”

Her tenure at the network began with 2016’s Summer Love and the successful Autumn in the Vineyard series, which also served as her executive producing debut for the channel. Since then, her collaborations with the network have become a staple of her professional life.

Personal Life and New Beginnings

Cook’s ties to the Hallmark universe extend into her private life as well. Following her divorce from Gillies in 2019, with whom she shares two children, Cook began a relationship with fellow Hallmark actor Brandon Routh in 2025. Both stars have found success within the network’s ecosystem, cementing their status as beloved figures in the romantic comedy sphere.
