Setting the Record Straight on Political Allegiances
As the Los Angeles mayoral primary approaches, Spencer Pratt has issued a pointed rebuttal to ongoing speculation about his political identity. The 42-year-old reality star took to social media to clarify that he does not identify with either major political party.
“Everyone is trying to claim me for their tribe. There’s no R next to my name, there’s no D next to my name,” Pratt stated on X. “I’m not part of a political party, because I hate politicians. I’m just Spencer, husband to Heidi, father to Ryker and Gunner, and I’m a pissed off Angeleno who loves my city and is fed up with what corrupt politicians have done to her.”
The Motivation Behind Past Affiliations
Although Pratt has been registered as a Republican since 2020, he is campaigning for mayor as an independent community advocate. Addressing questions about his previous ties to the GOP, Pratt pointed to a practical motivation rather than a deep-seated ideological commitment.
In a discussion regarding his position, he emphasized the importance of self-defense for his family. According to Pratt, his alignment with the Republican party was driven by their support for Concealed Carry Weapon licenses.
“That was what I aligned with. My safety, my family’s personal safety,” Pratt explained. “I know people don’t like guns but when people are threatening your life and your own security tells you you need to have home protection. … Once you feel fear and it’s real, you want to protect your family.”
Election Dynamics and Public Scrutiny
Pratt’s campaign has faced significant friction from both political opponents and public figures. Current Mayor Karen Bass and City Councilwoman Nithya Raman have frequently labeled Pratt as a “MAGA Republican” in their campaign messaging. Furthermore, during a recent press conference, President Donald Trump commented on Pratt, noting, “I’d like to see him do well. He’s a character. I assume he probably supports me.”
The criticism has not been limited to political rivals. Notably, TV personality Drew Carey expressed strong opposition to Pratt’s candidacy, stating on social media that voters should support more qualified individuals rather than someone he characterized as lacking a moral compass.
According to election tracking, Pratt currently trails Mayor Karen Bass in the polls. The primary election is scheduled for June 2. Should no candidate secure a majority of the votes, the two leading contenders will move forward to a runoff election on November 3.
